[Personal Thoughts and Observations]

From my earliest childhood recollections, my West Virginia "roots" were not so subtly impressed upon me by my grandparents.  As a young boy growing up in the bustling city of Renton, Washington, I realized that there was a world of many wonders to explore.  However, I never really understood much more than the home in which I lived in and the neighborhood I explored back in the days of the early 1960s.

My life always seemed destined to be a part of the fast-paced, hustle and bustle way of the modern world.  The commercial jet airliners, hydroplane races and the famous Space Needle I grew up with was a world away from the sleepy backwoods way of life in the hills of south central West Virginia my grandparents loved and cherished.  Yet, my grandparents always kept memorabilia of their West Virginia home proudly displayed in their home as visual reminders and often spoke fondly of their "home" in casual conversation.

Though my grandparents have since passed on, I later came to possess what I consider one of their most treasured possessions - a 1926 copy of the book History of Fayette County, West Virginia, by J. T. Peters and H. B. Carden.  For many years, this book was passed down through the generations between family members.  It was my grandmother who kept it as sort of the family bible because of references to the family ancestors she knew.  Now very well worn and showing years of use, I am now enjoying this book and will treasure it as a part of my heritage.

Apparently rare these days, the History of Fayette County, West Virginia is a source of interest for many individuals with ties to Fayette County.  The book contains thirty chapters and is over 770 pages in length.

I have attempted to transcribe the actual text of this book for the benefit and enjoyment for all.  While it is not my intention to claim this effort as my own work, all credit is given to the authors and those who helped make this book possible.
