The Burgess Surname DNA Project

Participants Wanted!

The Burgess Surname DNA Project is currently seeking "direct in-line male" Burgess volunteers to participate in this project.  Hosted by Professor Michael Burgess and sponsored through Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, LTD. This project hopes to link all the branches of the greater Burgess families in the United States as well as related Burgess families in Great Britain.

This project is seeking to collect Y-chromosome DNA data for all direct-line male descendants of individuals named Burges and Burgess, particularly those who have already established their ancestries through civil records dating back more than a hundred years. The Project will attempt to solidify relationships between the branches Burgess families, and to identify genetic markers for each of the major Burgess family lines in the United States and abroad.

Since the Burgess Surname DNA Project, in essence, traces the direct (inline) Burgess male Y-chromosome DNA, females (a) don't carry their father's Y-DNA, and (b) acquire a new surname by the way of marriage, in order to be relevant to this project.  The tested individual must be a male with the Burgess surname (or spelling variant) that wants to check his paternal line (father's father's father's...).

The test is simple, painless and ordered as either the Y-DNA12, Y-DNA25, Y-DNA37 or Y-DNA67 kit. ($99.00, $169.00, $229.00 and $349.00 respectively at this time.)  Women should look for a brother or cousin with the Burgess surname to be tested.  Women can also order a test for themselves, which will be the mtDNA ($179.00) or mtDNAPlus ($239.00), but the results of this test cannot be directly tied to the Burgess Surname DNA Project.

Participation is strictly voluntary and does require a nominal investment.  Participation is highly encouraged!  The more participants that there are in this project, the more accurately relationships can be determined between not only the major branches of the family, but the smaller family "sub-branches" as well.

UPDATE!

"Check" Tests are needed.  As the project grows, it is becoming increasingly important to verify established Burgess family branches through the additional testing of other family members of a specific family branch.  "Check" tests serve as sort of a second opinion and will do much to establish, verify and confirm a family line.

It is asked that persons volunteering for a check test follow the same criteria - a direct in-line Burgess male.  In order to resolve and better determine family relationships, the volunteer for a check test should be a distantly related cousin.  The more distant the better.  Generally, third and fourth cousins are prime candidates.  Failing this, first and second cousins will be welcomed.

Again, this test is voluntary and does involve a cost (see above).

How to participate and what happens next...

Before volunteering for the Burgess Surname DNA Project, visit the website of Professor Michael Burgess to read about the latest project status in detail.  He offers a wealth of in depth information about the project, its goals and history.  Additionally, Professor Burgess posts the latest results of DNA test results from current participants.
