Family Data File Notes

Please read the following, as it explains important information about the family information offered on The Breathless Moon.

General Research Notes

1   [No Guarantees] - All genealogical information presented on The Breathless Moon or offered as downloadable files are "AS-IS" with no warranty or guarantee, either expressed or implied.  The information found on this website is strictly and solely intended to be a reference guide and it is up to you, the family researcher, to verify and confirm any information found here as it may relate, pertain or otherwise deemed applicable to your research.  In the case of downloadable genealogical files, the only guarantee that can be made is that the file(s) will take up space on your computer's hard drive.
2   [Assume Nothing] - The genealogical information found on The Breathless Moon has been, by and large, collected from hundreds of various "Oral Family Tradition" sources.  Additionally, do not assume that such information is proven or documented through written civil records.  However, every attempt has been made to accurately present genealogical information.  In many cases information about most individuals was derived, compared and evaluated from several unrelated sources.  What you, the researcher, will find here is a composite offering of what is believed to be true and accurate.
3   [Sources] - Information sources are not offered or listed, as (1) the original contributor is not directly known, (2) contact information such as e-mail and postal addresses are no longer valid, or (3) details of the source information is referenced according to the contributor's preferences.  Please understand that there is no set or established means of recording and documenting source information.  This is left entirely up to the original contributor.  Still, most information presented here can be found through other sources on the Internet in its original form.  Please see the Breathless Moon's "Resource" page for further information.
4   [Errors & Omissions] - While every attempt has been made to accurately and full detail the genealogical information found on The Breathless Moon, there will inevitably be fundamental errors.  Such errors and omissions are not intentional, but may include (but not limited to):
a) Misspellings of names, places or other textual information.
b) Numerical errors such as dates or other numerical data.
c) Omission, though unintentional, of individuals or facts.
5   [Privacy] - Out of respect, no personally private, identifiable or confidential personal information about living, or assumed to be living, individuals will will be publicly offered on this website through either the online web page presentation or the downloadable genealogical files.  Such information is routinely screened out or masked before updated postings to The Breathless Moon are made.  At this time, personal information on individuals born after 1900 and/or married after 1910 is suppressed to ensure privacy.

Please see the Breathless Moon's Privacy Policy.

6   [Updates] - The information offered on this site is periodically updated and maintained.  Currently there is no set schedule for updating these files.  Updates occur when a significant number of new individuals or important information has been added to the master data file from which the information on this site was derived.
7   [Notes] - Where possible, notes for an individual may contain additional information that cites raw, unformatted textual extracts of written and recorded civil documents as well as information cited by the original contributor or their family members/contacts from memory.

There may be errors in this information resulting in translation.  Such information will need to be recheck and verified before accepting it as "proven" fact.

Data File Downloads

*** The downloadable family genealogy data files on this site are compressed and offered as "executable" files for your convenience.  You do not need any special software, but the following is important information before you will be able to use them.  To download and use the family genealogy data files offered on this site, please follow these instructions:

1) Click on the word or icon to download the file of your choice (either burged.exe or burftw.exe), from the "Burgess Legacy Genealogical Archives" page to your computer.

When you are prompted to select a folder to download your selected file to, either make a note of where this file will be "saved" to on your computer or specify a folder other than the default folder Windows selects automatically.

In either case, remember where the file is being saved to on your computer!

2) After the download go to that folder and find the file.  Just double (left button) click on it.  By default, this file will extract the useable Gedcom or FTW file to your "C:\Temp" folder.  You may choose another folder to extract the Gedcom or FTW file to as you wish.

3) Open your favorite genealogy program and import or "open" the newly extracted file.

This should be straightforward enough for most.  However, every computer is different and if you lose the file downloaded from this site, I really cannot help you in finding where it went to.  the best advise is to use the SEARCH features of Windows to locate the file using the filenames related above.

If all goes well, ENJOY!

My Family Notes
Daniel K. Burgess, Webmaster

1 In my research notes, I am only able to directly "prove" my lineage back to James Burgess (born 1788) through civil written documents. There is a question of his parentage and origin, but so far it appears that James is unrelated to any other branch of this family originating out of Maryland and Virginia.
2 My family connection with the Burgesses of Maryland and Virginia is considered inaccurate "Oral Family Tradition" at this point (March 2007).
3 Efforts to "prove" my family lineage through DNA genetic testing is underway.

In the absence of written civil records, DNA testing will hopefully prove a father to son to grandson (and so on) link through the comparison of specific Y-chromosome markers.

Please visit the Breathless Moon's DNA Project page for further information and links.
