Note: Austin is often confused with Austin F. Burgess hand has been identified as the son of James & Rachel Burgess. According to U. S. Federal Census records, Austin (and his wife, Nancy) never appear living in close proximity to James & Rachel.

In the 1850 census for Fayette Co., Virginia, Austin does not appear. This would indicate that he was residing in a neighboring county. In the 1860 census, he is listed as living in Fayette Co., Virginia, but separate from the family "cluster" of James & Rachel.
