Her rules was opposed by a confederation of Scottish nobles, headed by her bastard brother, the Regent Moray, and to these she was forced to surrender at Carberry Hill 15 Jun 1567. The Queen was compelled to sign a formal resignation of the crown to her son James. She escaped and fought the battle of Langside 13 May 1568. She fled to England but was captured and executed after 19 years in prison.
