POINDEXTER TONEY was born in 1763 son of William and Margaret (Sutherland) Toney of Franklin County, Virginia. He died about 1835 and is buried near Toneys Branch in Boone County. He may have served in the Revolutionary War because it is known that his twin brother, Carey, served. He may have been with other members of the Toney family when their ginseng camp on Toneys Branch was raided by Indians in the early 1790's. We know that his brother, John Toney, owned land there at that time. He married lst Mary Rawson of Franklin County, Virginia in 1788 and 2nd Jane Lilly, daughter of Robert, in 1797 in Montgomery County, Virginia. Some people have the theory that his lst wife and children may have been killed in the raid on the "Rooting Camp", but there doesn't seem to be a tradition in this area of such deaths.
Children of Poindexter and Jane were: Frances who m. Edley Elkins; Mary; James who m. Nancy Gillispie; Carey who m. lst a dau. of Nathan Turley, 2nd Telitha V. Bailey; Robert who m. lst Penedomonia Foster and 2nd Ellen Lavette, a schoolteacher; Margaret who m. lst John G. Jarrell, 2nd her cousin, William Toney; Harvey who m. Maria Fauber; Jane who m.
