"The Honorable William Burgess one of the most prominent colonists on the River Patuxent bore the arms of the family of Tsuro in Cornwell, Wales... three crosses - crosslet - fitches of the last. "

Epitaph of the Honorable William Burgess:

Here lyeth the body of William Burgess, Esq. who departed this life on ye 24th day of January 1686 aged about 64 years leaving his dear beloved wife Ursula and eleven children - seven sons and four daughters and eight grandchildren. In his lifetime he was a Member of His Lordship's Counsel of State. Provincial Governor - The Honorable William Burgess, the leading Colonist on the Patuxent from Marlborough in Wilts arrived in 1650 and at various times transported about one hundred and fifty persons including the forefathers of several of the most distinguished families now living in the State of Maryland. He was himself through his son Charles the ancestor of the Burgesses of Westphalia; through his daughter Susannah of the Sewells of Mattapenny; through his granddaughter Ursula of the Davises of Mount Hope who did not come from the principality of Wales before 1720' and through a still later female, one of the Bowies of Prince Georges Co., Maryland by Doctor Bowie of Upper Marlboro in 1853, many also of the first families of Kent Co. came about the year of Colonel Burgess' arrival, the few only who can by named here are the Ringgolds of Kent Island.

William Burgess is buried in All Hallow's Graveyard, South River, 9 miles from Annapolis. In his lifetime he was a member of his Lordship's Counsel of State, one of His Lordship's Deputy Governors, a Justice of ye High Provincial Court, Col. of a Regiment of ye ________ _______ __ and sometime General of allye Military Forces of the Province. Londontown founded by William Burgess in 1680 is now extinct.

Council of Deputy Governors Maryland - 1684-1688 The deputies named in the commission were George Talbot, Thomas Tailler, Colonel Vincent Lowe, Colonel William Stevens, Colonel William Burgess, Major Nicholas Sewall, and John Darnall . Most of them served the entire period indicated, but there were a few changes. Benedict Leonard Calvert, infant son of the Lord Proprietary, was commissioned governor, but the duties were actually performed by the deputies.

William Burgess came to Northampton County, Virginia about 1650. He then went to Maryland, settling on South River, bringing 150 "adventurers". In 1664 he was in command of the South River Rangers. In 1661 he was the High Sheriff of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. In 1665, he was Commander in Chief of all the forces of the 5 western shore counties. He was a member of Court of the State of Maryland, a Justice of the Province Court and a Deputy Governor fro 1678 to 1683.
