Note* The sixth child of John and (possibly Rebecca Stuart) was b. Abt 1744. He emigrated from Rockbridge Co., VA to Greenbrier Co prior to the Revolutionary War. He lived on Muddy Creek near the Blue Sulphur Spring. "Surveyed for Samuel McClung, 406 acres of land on Muddy creek, a branch of Greenbrier, Being part of order of Council granted to John Robinson and Company for 100,000 acres. Beginning at 2 Sycamores and Sugar tree on the bank of the Creek, thence . . . (more trees mentioned as bounds) in William Hamilton's line . . . (more trees)." Dated 1 March 1774 and signed by Sam'l Lewis (evidently the surveyor).

Samuel also participated in the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774 under the leadership of Capt. Matthew Arbuckle. He is listed with 27 men who remained in Greenbrier probably to protect the settlements. (Allegheny Regional ancestors) Samuel was the last man wounded by the Indians in West Virginia. They shot him, wounding him slightly across the loin. They also shot the cue off his wig. One Indian pursued him until they came to a creek. This creek, it seemed would prevent his escape. It was now a case of life or death. Summoning all his powers as he neared the creek, he made a desperate leap. Bounded clear over the stream and continued running. The Indian, disheartened by the prodigious leap, abandoned the chase. (This episode was printed in Ripley's Believe It or Not in the newspaper in the 1950s.)

Marriage*
Note* John was b. probably Ireland (by tradition). The following from Frances Buchanan (McC J #25,33) John McClung, Sr., and family came from Pennsylvania to Rockbridge Co. in the 1740s. He bought 279 acres of land in Augusta Co. from William Ward of SC on 6-20-1769, 249 of which were part of Benjamin Bordon's tract and 30 acres were part of an entry of King's land adjoining same (Augusta Co. DB 15,388). This land is between Fairfield and South River on Route 707. John, Sr., b. ca 1706 died in Rockbridge Co. 1788, and Rebecca Stuart died Rockbridge Co. 1781. (Researchers are trying to prove her parentage to John's children). John had 8 sons and 2 daughters: Thomas, Joseph, William, James, John Jr., Samuel, Edward, Charles, Nancy and Janett. All sons except John, Jr. settled in Greenbrier Co., WV. Nancy married in Rockbridge Co. 3-08-1779 to William Moore, b. Rockbridge Co. 1748, d. Rockbridge Co. 1841 and Janett married in Rockbridge Co. 3-2-1782 David Moore and remained in Rockbridge Co.

In the fall of 1781 John Sr., was taken to the home of son, John shortly after his wife died and before he quit housekeeping. Not content there, he returned shortly to his own home. After his daughter, Janett, married, he lived with Nancy Moore from the Spring of 1782 until his death. His estate was in litigation for many years. All children, many grandchildren, and depositions from them and other people were recorded in Chancery Court documents. A decree issued by Superior Court of Chancery held at Staunton 12-5-1810 ordered William Moore and wife Nancy to convey their interest in the land to Joseph McClung of Greenbrier Co., VA (Augusta Co. Chancery Court records and Rockbridge Co. DB H, 119). Joseph McClung of Greenbrier Co., Va, sold land to John McClung, Rockbridge Co., by deed dated 10-28-1812 (Rkbg DB H,204). Administration of estate granted William Moore 2-1788 Rockbridge Co. Court; inventory and appraisement of personal estate recorded 6-7-1791, Rockbridge Co. Court.

Rev. Wm. McClung (1904) states: Seven of his sons settled in Greenbrier County, WVA Their descendants are very numerous in that county, hence this branch of the family is designated as "Greenbrier McClungs." It is said that during the Civil War, two companies--the "Greenbrier Swifts" and the "Nicholas Grays," contained thirty-two McClungs. They rode the finest horses in Gen. Robert E. Lee's army. Alpheus Paris McClung was captain of the Greenbrier Swifts.

In the vicinity of Mount Lookout, W Va, there is a community known as the "McClung Settlement". The writer visited this community in 1902. He found them to be a peaceful, law-abiding, hospitable people.

This branch of the family is so numerous and the names so similar that it became necessary to make use of a sobriquet in order to distinguish between them.

John emigrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania, thence to Rockbridge Co., VA. He was a farmer and owned 278 acres of land in Rockbridge Co., VA in what was known as "the Forks." He sold this farm to his son Edward on April 23, 1783. When he sold his farm a neighbor asked him what he proposed to do now. he replied in a jocular manner, "I propose to live like a gentleman and have all the whiskey I want to drink." Even ministers of the gospel drank whiskey freely in those days. He owned a still-house valued at 100. He married Rebecca Stuart who was related to Hon. Alexander Hugh Holmes Stuart, of Staunton, VA who was Secretary of State in President Franklin Pierce's cabinet.

The full McClung tree from this point down has been logged at http://members.cland.net/~jmcclung/greenb.

Much of this information is from "McClung Genealogy" by William McClung, published 1904 by McClung Printing Company, of which I have a facsimile. John McClung left Ireland for America in 1720. Tradition says he was the cousin of James, William, and Hugh McClung who also came to Virginia. In 1730 he married Rebecca Stuart of the Pioneer Stuart family. He bought 279 acres of land in Augusta Co. from William Ward of South Carolina on 20 Jun 1769, 249 of which were part of Benjamin Bordon's tract and 30 acres were part of an entry of King's land adjoining same (Augusta Co. DB 15,388). This land is between Fairfield and South River on Route 707. They had ten children, who located various sections of Greenbrier Co. John McClung's grandson, Colonel Samuel McClung II was the builder of Morlunda in 1827. Morlunda is the name of their home. Another piece of information says that John had 2 or 3 wives. The first, un-named was the mother of thee migrant children. the second may have been Janett Thompson (according to Chalkey) and the third may have been Rebecca Stuart.

Note* MATTHEW LYLE was born about 1711 in the town land of Browndodd, one of the four towns of the parish of Larne, in County Antrim, Ireland. The house wherein he was born stands to the right of the road going from Larne to Raloo, near Raloo, and about two and one-half miles west and south of Larne. It is of stone with a slate roof (thatch when he was born) and in good condition in 1911, after an occupancy of over two hundred years.

Matthew Lyle was a son of James Lyle, whose wife was Margaret Snoddy, and grandson of Samuel Lyle, whose wife was Janet Knox. Taken from the church records in Larne Parish, Matthew Lyle and Esther Blair were proclaimed to marry Sept. 18, 1731. It is tradition he was under age at that time.

Marrying in 1731, he went to live on a farm, then under lease to his father, and situated near a small stream called Kilwaughter, and not far from his father's home. The location of this farm must have been highly eligible for a Chichester Mansion, since built, and now standing, is on the site of the house where Matthew Lyle lived for about six years. A site chosen for a home by a family of such distinction and large estates as the Chichesters, must have had much in its commendation in a land of high fertility and fairly picturesque.

On expiration of the lease in 1737, he was outbid for the lease and left homeless, Matthew and his wife faced a crisis and it was then that they first considered emigrating to America. Word had reached that part of Ulster, that land opportunities were being opened up on the Virginia frontier and it was known that Ephriam McDowell and his family, from the same locality, had gone in that direction and prospered. With no real home of their own, the decision of the Matthew Lyles to move was inevitable.

About 1740, Matthew and Esther embarked on the journey across the Atlantic, accompanied by their two young sons, James (aged eight) and John (aged six), their daughter Eizabeth, then only five, was left at home with her grandparents the Blairs, probably because she had been willed a life renewable in a lease of land from an uncle Daniel Blair.

Two other Lyle children, William and Robert, died in childhood, and another daughter Martha was born as the couple were in the course of their journey to America. The family arrived in Pennsylvania and moved to Augusta Co., VA and the first record of Matthew Lyle, along with Thomas McSpadden, in his new home is his signature on a petition, dated July 30, 1742, which was sent to Virginia Governor William Gooch, by 50 settlers requesting the appointment and commissioning of John McDowell as their captain for the defence of the frontier against raids by native Indian tribes.

Within a short period of time, Matthew Lyle acquired extensive lands and by 1755 this had totalled 751 acres. In 1746, he had purchased 451 acres from landowner Benjamin Borden at a cost of thirteen pounds and ten shilling. Seventeen years, later he sold this property to his son John for five shillings, a token amount. When he made his will, on June 15, 1773. Matthew Lyle bequeathed the home place of 300 acres to his son James and another tract of 110 acres to his daughter Elizabeth, who was still back home in Ireland. This stipulated: "In case my daughter Elizabeth does not come in from Ireland within the term of three years this tract was to be the property of James, who was to pay his sister fifteen pounds current money."

Matthew died in April, 1774, at the age of 63, having been predeceased by his wife, Esther, some years before. They are both buried in the old Timber Ridge cemetery, in unmarked graves.

It is of record that Matthew Lyle was one of the primary movers for the establishment of the Presbyterian church in the Valley of Virginia. The first Timber Ridge church was of logs and stood on land given for by Matthew Lyle. It stood where is now a road and near the old burial ground, on the farm where he lived. The stone Timber Ridge Church that is still there, is built on land given by Matthew Lyle and Thomas McSpadden.

Note* Samuel owned 400 acres of freehold land. When he first married, he built a home by the waterside near the flax mill built by his grandfather, Brice. He later abandoned it for a better home he built nearby on higher ground. This later house was still in good condition, even though much altered, as late as 1900. In the first house, his daughter Esther was born. She was living in the other house when she married Matthew Lyle in 1731. The ruins of the first house remain and mark her birthplace. Six of Samuel's children came to America about 1735. Samuel died March 20, 1754 at the age of 87. He buried in the Raloo cemetery. The Blair Coat of Arms is on his tombstone: on a saltire five mascles, in the chief a mullet, in the base a garb, in the flanks each an in crescent all within a treasure. Crest: a stag courant. Motto: Amos Probos (I Love the Virtuous).
