Note* Robert Riddle was drafted into the Union Army in 1864. His outfit was Company I, 18th Missouri Union Infantry. He was a private. Robert was drafted at 33 years of age and sent to join his outfit in service with General Sherman in the march through the Carolinas.

Beginning on February 22, 1865 he is listed as absent without leave. A little later he is listed as a deserter and a note is made that he supposedly joined the enemy. He is listed this way for quite a while and his record is terrible. As it turns out, Robert was captured by the confederate forces during the battle of Liberty Hill, South Carolina and sent to Andersonville, Georgia, Prison which any Civil War student can attest to was the worst possible place a Union prisoner could be incarcerated.

The prisoners slept amongst and walked on the dead by the thousands. There were no sanitary conditions and no food. The mortality rate among these prisoners was incredible. Robert, however, survived to be paroled at Jacksonville, Florida at the close of the war on April 28, 1865. It is interesting to note that he was never apologized to or reimbursed in any way for the Army defamed of his character during his incarceration.

Another interesting note about his service is that in 1900 his wife Mary Susan (Cayton) Riddle applied for a widows pension based on his service which she received. My (Dennis G. Parker) great great great grandmother Elisabeth (Watson) Merritt who was unrelated to Robert Riddle filed an affidavit on Mary behalf to help her obtain the pension. This document is included in Robert's scrapbook and contains Elisabeth Merritt's signature.
