| Note* |
Joseph Miller Harvey was enlisted on February 11, 1865 as a Private, in Company A, 51st Regiment of Missouri Union Infantry. His pension records supply various interesting facts about his military time.
First, the records indicate that he was in the Missouri militia prior to enlisting in the regular army. Just for how long or in what capacity has not been determined. Joseph was Honorably discharged on the 31st of August 1865 at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri. At the close of the war Joseph and his brother Oliver got on their horses and went home.
Joseph was arrested at his house a short time later and charged with desertion because he did not wait to be discharged to go home. Ultimately after the court martial he was found not guilty of desertion but guilty of being absent without leave. He was sentenced to 30 days hard labor at the Gratiot Street Military Prison in St. Louis.
After serving his sentence he was released, discharged and returned home. Also in his military pension record is a story about how he broke his hand while in the army. In August 1865 he was the company cook. He was cooking potatoes at Ewing barracks in St. Louis with the peels on. A soldier named Clark became angry because he wanted the potatoes peeled. He came up behind Joseph and hit him in the back of the head twice. Joseph then turned around and hit Mr. Clark in the mouth. When he hit Clark, he broke two bones in his right hand.

William Allen Parker
M, b. 30 June 1867, d. 11 June 1925
| Note* |
11 Jun 1925: William was employed by the Kansas Public Service Company as a track foreman. He had been a railroader most of his life prior to being employed by the street railway or Trollies as they were called. He was working on the tracks at the intersection of 5th and Commercial streets in Atchison Kansas when he was struck by a car rounding the corner. He received broken ribs, crushed shoulder, a fractured skull and several other injuries. He died fifteen minutes later. The driver of the car ran away but later turned himself in and was charged.
16 Jan 1919: William at one time was quite a drinking man which was quite common in those days. On January 16, 1919 , William and a friend, "Slim" Burnette, were on their way to William's brother John "Jack" Parkers home to become involved in a fight as the two brothers were quarreling. John's son, Jennings Brian Parker, became worried and decided to protect his father. He grabbed a shotgun and started out the door. His mother begged him not to take a gun so Brian complied and tossed the gun against the wall. The shotgun discharged and hit Brian in the stomach. He died a short time later in St. Joseph, Missouri. The citizens of Rushville, Missouri then got together and ordered William and Slim to leave their town and never return. William then moved his family to Atchison Kansas and straightened himself out feeling responsible for the death of his nephew. It should be noted that William became a well respected and well liked citizen of Atchison after changing his ways.

Excerpt Atchison Daily Globe May 17, 1897:
Mrs. Mary J. Parker of Rushville, had both her legs cut off at 11:00 this morning by a K C boxcar that was pushed over her in switching.
Also May 18, 1897:
Mrs Parker, the unfortunate woman who was run over at Rushville, was still alive at a late hour this afternoon but her chances for recovery are very slim. Both of her legs were amputated this afternoon.
Excerpt St. Joseph Daily Herald May 18, 1897:
A SAD ACCIDENT
Mrs. Mary Parker of Rushville had both legs cut off by a freight train yesterday cannot recover.
Word reached St. Joseph yesterday of a fearful accident which befell Mrs. Mary Parker of Rushville. Mrs. Parker was run over by a train of freight cars which were being switched to another track. Both her limbs were cut off just below the thigh. The injured woman had not died yesterday afternoon but she cannot recover. Mrs. Parker is a widow and is well known at Rushville, where she has lived for many years. It seems she had a vegetable garden across the railroad tracks and had been attending to it just before she was injured. It is said a number of empty freight cars had been standing on the track by the garden for several weeks. Mrs. Parker had been in the habit of stooping under the cars in getting to the garden. Yesterday she crawled under the cars as usual but did not notice they were attached to an engine. Before she could be warned she was run over.
Excerpt St. Joseph Daily Herald May 20, 1897:
Mrs. Mary Parker, the widow woman who was run over by a train of freight cars at Rushville last Monday, died at 5 o'clock yesterday morning. Her left leg was amputated in the hope that it would save her life. Both of her limbs were terribly crushed. Mrs. Parker was leaning against one of the cars near her garden when the train started suddenly and she was pulled under the wheels. The deceased was well known in that vicinity.
