Edward Coler Deshields, Sr. - July 29, 2003
At 88 Edward Coler Deshields (AKA Eddie and Coler) is the oldest member of the Deshields Clan, at least the one that emanated from the Tyrrell / Washington County, North Carolina area. Coler was born July 20, 1915 in South Hill, VA to Zephaniah (AKA Zeph) Deshields and Ethel May Spruell Deshields. Zeph was the oldest of 10 children surviving beyond adolescences. His parents were Henry Simeon Deshields and Charles Anna Alexander Deshields. Coler's brothers are Rodney, Leon, and Forrest
Coler has seen a great deal of change during his lifetime. In 1915 radio was used primarily for ship to shore communications, TV did not exist, the automobile was a relatively new and was an insignificant means of transportation, the airplane was dangerous and technologically challenged, and there was no Internet; imagine that.
Coler's father was a preacher and the typical relocation schedule for the profession gave him the opportunity to expand his geographical and cultural horizons. He grow up in West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, and Virginia.
The depression had an impact on Coler's high school years. The family moved back to South Norfolk, now Chesapeake, during the period.
Coler married Margaret Wilson McKeel November 29, 1934. At the time he was working for a small grocery chain in the Norfolk area. He went to work at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1941 as a Master Tool Maker and stayed until 1947. In 1947 he and a partner opened a grocery store in Suffolk, Va. He later sold out to his partner and opened a second grocery store in Suffolk, the Sidewalk Market. He stayed in the store until 1970 when he went back to work in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard until his retirement.
Along the way he had two children Sandra Jean and Edward Coler Jr. As a result, he now has five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
With age Coler has the normal amount of health problems. To this he added a broken foot which currently has him recuperating.
He now lives in Christiansburg, VA, close to Sandra. He continues to add to his technical skills with frequent use of his PC and e Mail.
-----2004
Died in a Blacksburg Virginia Hospital after a series of bacterial infections overcame his ability to fight back.
