Enlisted at age 16 in Co D, 9th Va Regiment. He was wounded at Williamsburgh, 5 June 1862. He was severely wounded in side at Gettysburg, 3 July 1863 and a POW there. In hospital at Chester, PA, and exchanged Nov 1863. POW at Sailors Creek 6 April 1865. Oath of Allegiance to US 28 June 1865.
He was a lawyer at Pearisburg, moved to Princeton in 1870. At different times he was Prosecuting Attorney of Mercer, member of Constitutional Convention, State Senator / 1898, Judge of Circuit Court of Mercer.
Biography:
Representative from West Virginia; born near Pearisburg, Giles County, Va., April 10, 1845; attended the common schools; enlisted in the Confederate Army in April 1861 and served four years in the Seventh Virginia Regiment of Infantry, Kemper’s brigade of Pickett’s division; studied law; was admitted to the bar in Giles County, Va., in 1867 and commenced practice in Pearisburg, Va.; moved to Mercer County, W.Va., in 1870; prosecuting attorney 1872-1876; member of the State senate in 1878; resigned; judge of the ninth judicial circuit 1880-1888; elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1899-March 3, 1901); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1900 to the Fifty-seventh Congress; moved to Portland, Oreg., in 1908 and resumed the practice of law; died in that city July 7, 1917; interment in Mount Scott Park Cemetery.

Individual:
Commanded a company of horsemen in 1780 under major Joseph Cloyd. Wm. Preston was the colonel and commandant.
At the Yadkin River Capt. Pearis was severely wounded in the shoulder, which disabled him for further military service. In the same battle Pearis killed with his own sword a man by the name Burke, his own cousin, from which he took his sword and this with his own sword together with his uniform with the bullet hole in the shoulder were preserved in the family until fire destroyed the house of Mer louis A Pearis where they had been left for preservation. The George Pearis DAR Giles County is named for Col. George Pearis.
