* Samuel Richardson and Josiah Ellsworth - Thomas Burge (or Burgess), the immigrant ancestor, son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Pye) Burgess, was born about 1603 in England and came from Barton Earls, Northamptionshire, in 1630, landing at what is now Salem.
He brought with him his wife Dorothy (Waynes) and their young children. They remained for a time in Lynn, Massachusetts. On July 3, 1637, he was granted land in Duxbury. This he forgeited by his removal to Sandwich the same year, and it was assigned to Nicholas Robbins, who paid him for the improvements which had been made on the land.
Thomas Burgess was one of the first settlers of Sandwich in 1637, and Savage calls him "a chief one of them." He was an original member of the church in 1638, and became a large landholder. He served the town in nearly every office and was deputy to the general court at Plymouth for several years.
The estate which he occupied remained in the family for many generations, and 1863 the cellar of his house could still be seen.
Thomas died February 13, 1685, aged eighty-two years, and his grave was marked by a stone imported from England. "It was the only monument" says Amos Otis, "set up for any pilgrim of the first generation."
His only wife, Dorothy, died two years later, February 27, 1687.
His will dated April 4, 1684 and proved March 5, 1685, named his son-in-law Ezra Perry as legatee and executor. The dates of birth of his children are not known, but Savage thinks Jacob and Joseph may have been born in Sandwich, although the dates given would indicate Lynn.

He was a member of Parliament from Truro. In his will he mentions a brother-in-law Anthony Pye. The pedigree and arms of the Burgess family is given in Visitation of Cornwall, 1620.

Keziah Burgess
F, b. circa 1790, d. 1865
| Note* |
I have an ancestor named Keziah, (not sure of the actual spelling - Kezziah, Kesiah-Keziah ). Her last name was Burgess. We cannot find out if she was married to a Burgess or if she was born a Burgess. She had three sons (that we know about). Armstead Burgess, Oliver Burgess, Sparrell Edward Burgess. She was born in Va. approx 1790. Sometime in 1838-1840 they went to Barren Co. KY. That is where she died. We are trying to find anyone who might be able to link with this line of the Burgess family. We cannot find any mention of the son's father by name or anything. Keziah (Kessey) signed a bond to have Armstead bonded sometime when he was small in Va. I think maybe their father was in the Revoluntionary War and mabe was killed or something. We also found a Keziah Burgess who was bonded in 1790. Some of our family doing research thinks it might be our Keziah, but I don't think so. I think it was another person. There are some links to that person, but I don't think it is the same Keziah. She was bonded to a person named Jno Nichols. And Armstead was bonded to a person named John Holligan. These names come up from time to time in the researching, but it is very detailed. They lived in Bedford Co. and Franklin Co. VA. If you have any info that might help me I'd appreciate it. Some other surnames linked to our line of the Burgess family are Jones, Mitchell, and Smith, Thanks.
from rootsweb message board
SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN BORN ABOUT 1790 IN VA. I FOUND HER WITH HER CHILDREN ON THE 1840-1850 CENSUS IN BARREN CO. KY. I THINK ALSO ON THE 1860 BARREN CO. KY CENSUS TOO. BUT CAN'T BE CERTAIN UNTIL I LOOK THROUGH MY RECORDS. BUT SHE WAS THERE IN VA UNTIL ABOUT 1840 AND REMAINED IN BARREN CO. KY UNTIL SHE DIED. ONE OF THE CENSUS RECORDS SUGGESTED THAT HER CHILDREN'S FATHER WAS BORN IN PA. BUT NOT FOR SURE ABOUT THAT EITHER. YOU KNOW HOW UNRELIABLE SOME OF THE CENSUS RECORDS ARE. BUT IT STATED THAT ON A COUPLE CENSUS RECORDS.
from message board on rootsweb.
Documentation on her:
On the 27th of May 1817, We find the following: On the motion of the overseers of the Poor - It is ordered that they bind Armstead BURGESS son of Kessey BURGESS to John HOLLIGAN according to law. Old County Court Order Book 17 page 408. Bedford County, Virginia. Present David Saunders, Preasant M. GOGGLIN, John HEADEN, and Wm IRVING Gentleman Justice and Court.
I have found Keziah in Bedford County, Virginia, in 1790 (which is about the year our Keziah was born). I found her bonded to Jno Nichols Sen. There was also a James Burgess bonded to the same man in 1795. I didn't know they ever bonded infants, but if this is our Keziah, I guess they did. She and James would have have to have been related some way. Have you run across this same information and, if so, have you been able to identify James? If this is our Keziah the she either married a man named Burgess or never married and just used her maiden name for her three sons.
