"My father was a cabinet maker by trade. His family left Cozad, Nebraska and moved to Independence Missouri around 1900. He only went as far as the 8th grade in school, but was always good working with his hands and was very clever at making things. He lived for a time in Chicago and Denver, where he met Mother.
After Daddy and Mother married they returned to Kansas City and lived for a couple of years with Grandma and Grandpaparents in Independence.
I remember Mother telling me that he was not much of a letter writer and never had told his parents that he had remarried and had a daughter. One day they just drove up in front of his parents house in Independence and Daddy asked Mother to wait with me in the car while he went in and told his parents about us.
Jobs were very hard to get during the depression and for better than a year Mother and Daddy and I lived and worked at the local amusement park ( Fairy Land Park) in the Penny Arcade. Mother was the Cashier there and Daddy kept all the machines running and the place clean. I had a wonderful time living there. I was only about 4 and made friends with the people who ran the rides. I could ride the merry-go-round free any time I wanted. As a little girl I took my naps in a box with a blanket in it at Mother's feet in the cashier's booth at the Penny Arcade.
After leaving there they rented a 2 story house in Kansas City as a way to make some money. They divided the house into 4 "apartments", rented 3 of them and lived in the other. There was only 1 bathroom in the house. Mother and Daddy and I lived in 2 rooms -- a small kitchen and a living room with a sofa that made into a bed. I slept on a little cot in the kitchen.
During the depression Daddy could not find work. A friend of Mother' s told her of an opening for a nightwatchman at the Kansas City Card Company . Her friend knew the man who would be doing the hiring for this job. Daddy told of going to the factory early in the morning and seeing some 200 men lined up waiting to see if they could get the job.
He had been told to go to the office and ask for a certain man, which he did, going right to the head of the line and passing all who were waiting. He gave his name and the man hired him right then. He always felt badly about the men who were waiting vainly in line. He worked there every night for about 2 years.
Finally, when times were getting worse, they decided to move to California, which they did in 1937.
Daddy drove out alone and Mother and I came on the train later after he found work. Mother and Daddy lived the rest of of their lives in Southern California - in South Los Angeles and later in Orange County.
During the war Daddy worked for about 3 years on
Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" airplane.
Daddy passed away in 1976 and Mother in 1989."

"The Jones family moved to Limon, Colorado when Morther was just a baby. Her father worked on the railroad in Limon for many years. Her mother died in the flu epidemic of 1918 leaving her to cook and clean for her father and 3 older brothers. She worked as the telephone operator there when she was in high school. She worked nights. There was a little cot in the place where the switchboard was and she could sleep when there were no calls.
After graduation she moved to Denver and lived with the family of her best friend, Ruth. The family ran a bakery and she worked there for a time. She then got a job as the only office worker at a battery installation shop. She took orders for batteries and sent out tow trucks for stalled cars.
One winter, after she had been there a couple of years her brother, Bernard, called her and asked if she would like to move with San Francisco with him and his wife the next day. She said she really wouldn't dare without giving notice at work because they would be in a real fix without her. Her brother persisted, however, and she decided she couldn't pass up the opportunity and she did go.
She often spoke of how thrilled she had been when she got off the train in San Francisco to find the sun shining and the weather warm since it had been so cold and snowy in Denver. She stayed with them for several months . She also mentioned how guilty she felt about leaving her boss at the battery shop in such a spot.
She met my father at a dance when she had moved back to Denver and they were married about 48 years.
During World War II she got a job doing doing defense work on an assembly line and later worked for Minneapolis-Honeywell on an assembly line. It was very hard and tiring work and certainly no fun, but she stuck it out for 15 years. She was a very hard worker all her life and lived to be 82 years of age.
She passed away peacefully in her sleep, which was certainly a great blessing."
