Note* Family tradition assumes that Allen was born in Kanawha Co., Virginia. This is likely as his father, James, is listed in the 1820 U. S. Federal Census for Kanawha Co., Virginia. As related above, the 1810 – 1818 Virginia Property Tax Rolls places James in Bedford Co., Virginia, shortly before the birth of Allen. From 1819 – 1824, the same personal property tax records shows James living in Kanawha Co., Virginia and from 1825 to 1829 the personal property tax records place James and his family in Logan Co., Virginia.

It can be assumed that Allen was living at home, with James and Rachel, at least until about 1837 when he would have turned 18 years of age.
