I was truly glad to get your good letter of July 29 and should have answered it a long time ago. I was glad for the in formation you gave in your letter of the early Harless families. I have no record earlier than that of my Great Grandfather Harless.
He moved with his family from Giles Co., Va., in 1821, when my Grandfather, Leroy Harless was 21 years old and settled in what is now Boone Co., W. Va., near Peytona on Big Coal River.
Besides my Grandfather, I have a record of the names of some if not all of his sons as follows: Wesley, Philip, James, Floyd, and a half brother, Uncle Edward Harless, who was a Baptist minister.
I knew of only one girl, Aunt Lucinda Meadow, who lived and died at Peytona. She was a full sister to Uncle Edward Harless, and her husband's name was John Meadows.
My Great Grandmother was a full blooded German and talked broken English. My father told me that he was glad when he used to visit at Grandfather's for he enjoyed hearing him talk. I remember also this story that my Father told me of the testimony that Great Grandfather once gave in a Class Service. "Me an my vife Katy ve pulls togader. Ve don't vone pull vone vay an von toder. My bredren a veels as resolute in de cause as a bull dog."
Pray that I may always emilate his resolute spirit in the cause of truth and righteousness. My Great Grandfather was killed by the falling of a tree when he was 86 years old. I do not know the year of his death; I wish I did. As my father told me: He was well and strong when he was killed, and when riding a horse would sit as erect in the saddle as a young man, but he was very hard of hearing. He had taken a turn of corn up to Racine to a water mill there.
This mill was still owned and operated by a man we all called Uncle Decker Toney, when I was past 15 years old. (I am now 65.) For about one half mile down Big Coal River below this mill the road is between rock cliffs on one side of the road and the river on the other side, and it was some where along here that my Great Grandfather was killed. He was returning home, riding toward Peytona. Some men were above the rock Cliffs chopping on a tree as he came along, and had the tree almost ready to fall. He had just ridden past where the tree was to fall, and would have been out of danger, but as the tree started to fall, the men started to yell, and he wheeled his horse and rode back and the tree fell and killed both him and his horse. Being hard of hearing, he heard the men hollering, but could not tell where the sound was coming from.
My Grandfather married a Miss Douglas in 1819, two years before they moved from Giles Co. He was born the eighth or ninth of February 1800, and died in Boone Co. in August 1895.
Uncle Cumberland Harless, who was a Captain in the Union Army during the war, died about eight or ten years before. A younger brother who was persuaded to join the Confederate Army was killed near Huntington.
My Father, John Lewis Harless, was also born in February and there was only one day's difference in the date of Grandfather's and Father's birthdays, one being the 8th and the other the 9th of February, but I an not sure now which without looking up the record.
Father was born in 1831 and died in September 1916, in Boone Co. The last of his family, except myself. My half sister died at her home in Boone Co. the 12th of this month. She was 82 years old, and her name was Sara Frances Morrison.
I hope you will be able from what I have written to help me connect my Great Grandfather's family and your Mother's people. Also please tell me all you know about those descendants of Henry Harless that you spoke of in Texas.
