A casket containing human remains was discovered Saturday in a wooded area in Fayette County, and police are investigating the incident as a criminal act.
Fayette Sheriff Bill Laird said notification was received around 10 a.m. through the Fayette County 911 Center of the discovery of the casket containing what was believed to be human remains near a gas well off Chestnutburg Road near the Ames Heights area.
"At this time, investigators are confirming the location of a steel casket containing human remains which appear to have been disinterred from another location prior to being transported to this scene," Laird said.
The scene was processed for evidence, Laird said, and the casket and body were transported to the state medical examiners office in South Charleston for identification. Both the identity of the body and the original burial location remained unknown Saturday night.
"The condition of the casket and the body has led to the preliminary conclusion that the casket and body had been buried for a number of years, but were only recently exhumed," Laird said. "The investigation into this matter remains ongoing."
The investigation is being conducted by Detective Sgt. J.K. Sizemore and Detective G.A. Chapman of the sheriffs office.
"Disinterment of a body is a felony in West Virginia, punishable by two to five years in prison," Laird said.
The sheriff is asking anyone with any information about recent disturbances of gravesites at any local cemeteries located within the area or the identity of the person or persons responsible for the commission of this crime to contact the sheriffs department at 574-3590 or Crime Stoppers at 255-7867.
He said there are a number of rural cemeteries in Fayette County.
Laird said there hadnt been another crime such as this in his nearly 13 years as sheriff.
"We certainly have a keen interest in providing the proper return of the casket to its original resting place and identifying the person or persons responsible for committing such acts," he said.

Following an inspection performed at the office of the Chief Medical Examiner in South Charleston Monday, Fayette County Sheriff Bill Laird said the services of a forensic anthropologist will be required to identify the human remains found in a steel casket Saturday in a wooded area off Chestnutburg Road near the Ames Heights area.
The condition of the casket and the body has led to the preliminary conclusion that the casket and body had been buried for a number of years but were only recently exhumed, Laird said.
According to Laird, detectives have identified the model of the casket, which was distributed by the Aurora Casket Company in Aurora, Ind., and have learned it was manufactured after 1948 but prior to 1990. Investigators are continuing to work closely with the company, Laird said, in hopes of determining the local funeral home to which the casket was sold and any other information that could assist them in identifying the remains.
The sheriff is urging anyone with information about the person or persons responsible for this incident or information regarding the recent disturbance of graves in the Fayette County area is urged to contact the Sheriffs Department at 547-3590 or Crime Stoppers at 255-STOP.
The investigation is ongoing and is conducted by Detective Sgt. J.K. Sizemore and Detective G.A. Chapman of the Fayette County Sheriffs Department.

A casket discovered last weekend in a wooded area of Fayette County, and containing human remains, was taken from a private family mausoleum near the Ansted area of the county, police said Wednesday night.
In the latest development in the case, Fayette Sheriff Bill Laird said his office received information Wednesday morning from a concerned citizen reporting the possible disturbance of a grave site at the mausoleum.
"Following the investigation of this report, the Fayette County Sheriffs Department has confirmed this as being the site from which the casket and remains were removed ..." Laird said.
The casket and remains were discovered by a squirrel hunter last Saturday in a wooded area off Chestnutburg Road near the Ames Heights Road area.
Laird said the identity of the person whose remains were disinterred was being withheld pending notification of extended family members.
He added that his office is continuing to work with the state medical examiner's office in South Charleston "to finalize the identification requirements necessary to provide for the re-interment of these remains at the original burial site."
Laird said the body was originally interred in 1983 in what was described as an above-ground mausoleum kept and maintained by a family native to the area.
He said evidence processed at the scene Wednesday indicated entry was gained to the burial vault by means of forced entry made to the concrete and marble face of the mausoleum.
"Detectives with the Fayette County Sheriffs Department are continuing the investigation in an effort to identify the person or persons responsible for the commission of this crime," the sheriff said.
Disinterment of a body is a felony in West Virginia, punishable by two to five years in prison. Laird is asking anyone with information concerning the identity of the person or persons responsible for the criminal act to contact the sheriff's office at 574-3590 or Crime Stoppers at 255-7867.
The investigation is being conducted by sheriffs Detective Sgt. J.K. Sizemore and Detective G.A. Chapman.
