| Note* | Obituary: Lois Dempsey Lee, 80, was lovingly received into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer. Lois was born in Jodie on April 24, 1925, to the late Fred and Myrtle Dempsey. She and her family moved to Florida in 1963. She retired from the U.S. civil service after 31 years of service, where she worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Air Force. Upon retirement, she resided in Strawberry Plains, Tenn., for eight years before returning to Florida in 1988. Lois faithfully attended the First Baptist Church of Merritt Island, Fla. She loved her Lord with all her heart. She lived her faith; a life exemplified by acts of love for her family and for others. Lois was very accomplished at needlework of all kinds, her quilts, cross-stitchery, and handmade garments were works of art. Lois also loved making her home beautiful, working diligently in her flowerbeds and making many of the decorations that graced her walls. Her greatest accomplishments, however, were in sharing her love and faith with her family and friends. All who knew her loved her, and all will miss her immensely. Truly, the angels in Heaven are rejoicing. Our loss is Heaven's gain. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Nathan B. Lee; daughter, Rebecca Acuff of Cocoa, Fla.; sons, Danny (Joanne) of Spotsylvania, Va., Steve (Candy) of Merritt Island, Fla., Roger (Terri) of Orlando, Fla., and Timothy of Rockledge, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Michael, Brian, and Angie Acuff, Christi Cook, Sandi Homan, Mandi O'Brien, and Shawn and Danny McGee; eleven great-grandchildren; sister, Leona Mullins of Ansted; and brother, Lloyd Dempsey of Mount Lookout. Gunn, who is under guard in a Beckley hospital following the shooting of the two deputies while on a routine patrol, was charged in the murder of Roger Lee Treadway, and wounding Treadway's partner. Investigation by Fayette County Sheriff C. D. Epperly and his staff continues following the death of Deputy Treadway, 25-year-old Fayetteville resident, about 2:45 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8, near Hico on U. S. Route 60. According to Sheriff Epperly, Deputies Treadway and W. Leland Dempsey, 34, also of Fayetteville, were on routine patrol when they were flagged down by a motorist who informed them he had run out of gas, demandiing used of their car. When the deputies refused, alleged assailant, Bruce N. Gunn is said to have fired five shots from a .12 gauge shotgun hitting Treadway in the head and neck. Dempsey, who was also injured in the shooting spee, was treated at a Beckley hospital and later released. Gunn, who had been visiting his parents at Walton in Roane County, is reported to be in critical condition in Raleigh General Hospital, as a result of being shot during the exchange of fire. Deputy Dempsey stated he also began firing after Gunn fired the first shot. Both officers carred .357 magnum hand guns. Sheriff Epperly, reported that the two deputies, working out of the Danese detachment, had just gone on duty at 1 a.m., and they were on routine patrol when the incident occurred. According to a member of the family, Gunn had visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gunn, and was en route home to Driver, Va., where his wife lived. He is charged on a murder count, according to the sheriff's department, with guards posted at the hospital. Damage to the patrol car included a window being shot out and damage to the doors. It was impounded and is in an Oak Hill garage. Following his release from the hospital, Dempsey returned to the sheriff's department, remaining there until about 7 a.m. Treadway was graduated in November 1973 from the police academy's training school, and had served as a Fayetteville city policeman before going with the Sheriff's department. Born at Oak Hill on May 5, 1950, he was a son of Jefferson and Doris Sexton Treadway of Lansing and was a graduate from Fayetteville High School. He also was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict, a member of the LaFayette Lodge 57, Ancient Free and Accepted Mason's, and a member of Cotton Hill Baptist Church. Dempsey had graduated approximately two weeks ago from the police academy's training school. Services for Treadway were conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11 at Fayetteville Memorial Building, with Fayette's deputies serving as active pallbearers, the Rev. Jack Logan and the Rev. William Secrist officiating. Burial was in Huse Memoral Park at Fayetteville. A delegation of deputies from other counties in the state also attended. Treadway's other survivors include his widow, Mrs Nora Jones Treadway; sisters, Mrs. Connie Harrah of Fayetteville and Mrs. Caren Hunt of Glen Jean; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Treadway of Fayetteville and Mrs. Modena Sexton of Oak Hill. [Source: Anita McClung] Publication: Charleston Daily Mail Published: Oct. 8, 1975 Headline: Alleged Assailant Critical, Fayette County Deputy Dies in Shootout A Fayette County sheriff's deputy was shot to death early today in a shooting spree with a man who had flagged down their patrol car. The man charged with the shooting of the deputies was hospitalized with a gun wounds and in poor condition. Deputy Roger Treadway, 24, of Lansing died with a gunshot wounds to the head and neck following the 2 a.m. shooting hear Hico on U. S. 60 about 10 miles east of Ansted. The alleged assailant, Bruce N. Gunn, 20, a native of Walton in Roane County, was in poor condition at Raleigh General Hospital. according to a hospital spokesman, Gunn went into surgery at 5:10. He was still undergoing treatment at 9:45 a.m. Deputy W. Leland Dempsey, 34, of Fayetteville, was treated and released from Raleigh General Hospital for wounds and abrasions in the side, a spokemans said. Gunn and Dempsey were taken to the Beckley hospital from Oak Hill hospital. Sheriff C. D. Epperly said the fatal shooting ocurred when Gunn got out of his car along U. S. Route 60 to flag down the deputies for assistance. According to Epperly, when the deputies approached Gunn, he told them he needed their car because his 1972 Ford was out of gas. When the deputies refused to turn over their car, Epperly said the shooting began. the sheriff said it has not been determined who started the shooting. Epperly said approximately one dozen shots were fired by the assailant and two deputies. Gunn used a .12 gauge shotgun in the spree. The assailant's father, Robert Gunn of Walton, said today his son was en route to Driver, Va. "I have no explanation for what happened -- no idea." the father said. Gunn said his son was headed for Virginia where his wife lived. He had been visiting his family in Roane County for about a week, the father said. Charges against Gunn are pending, Epperly said, the outcome of the surgery. During the shootings, Epperly said a window was shot out of the sheriff's car and doors were damaged by the blasts. He said the car has been impounded at a garage in Oak Hill. The Fayette sheriff's department said today that Gunn fired the first shots as his car was parked along U. S. 60. Earlier today the sheriff said there was some question as to who fired first. Epperly also confirmed that Gunn's car was out of gas. He added the alleged assailant's car has been impounded at the sheriff's department. This is the first time anything like this has ever happened in my department, said Epperly. "It was a shock to all of us." Treadway joined the sheriff's office in 1972, according to Epperly. According to Epperly, Treadway's body was to be taken to Beckley for an autopsy. The dead man's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Treadway. After being released ffom the hospital, Epperly said Dempsey, the deputy who survived the incident, returned to the sheriff's department where he stayed until about 7 a.m. "He was really torn up over it." the sheriff said. According to Tpr. G. R. Young, Treadway graduated from the state police academy's basic training school in November, 1973. Young added that sh saw Treadway last week when he attended Dempsey's graduation from the school. "He (Treadway) was a real good police officer. I knew him when I was stationed as a trooper in Fayette County." said Young.
