Hester Dempsey Skaggs, 97, of Ansted died September 26, 2001 at the Ansted Center-Genesis Elder Care of complications from a stroke. Mrs. Skaggs was most proud of her contributions towards the education (second and fourth grades) of children in and around Ansted for 42 years. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star. Mrs. Skaggs is survived by her husband of 64 years, William R. Skaggs; son, Kenneth Grose of Evansville, Ind.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren, all living out of state. Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, September 30, at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home with Rev. Phillip Dent officiating. Interment will be at Hughes Memorial Cemetery, Fayetteville. Mary Frances Dempsey, 76, of Hickory, N.C., died Dec. 20, 2003, at her home following an extended illness.
Born Dec. 30, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Mary Buchanan. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Dempsey; sisters, Odema Ledord and Barbara Sue Buchanan; and brothers, James L. Buchanan and Emmitt Buchanan.
Mrs. Dempsey was a homemaker and a member of Christian Fellowship Chapel of Granite Falls.
Surviving: sister, Wilma B. Jones of Hickory; brother, Charles Buchanan of Hickory; sisters-in-law, Elouise Danko of Ravenswood, Leola Buchanan of West Virginia, and Geraldine Workman of Lansing; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and grand-nieces.
Funeral service was held at Christian Fellowship Chapel with arrangements by Bass-Smith Funeral Home. Burial followed in Sunset Hills Cemetery, Granite Falls.

Geraldine Ethyl Dempsey Workman, 76, of Lansing, passed away Friday, April 13, 2007, at home following an extended illness.
Born on February 21, 1931, at Spy Rock, she was the daughter of the late Earl Stanley Dempsey and Thelma Holly Dempsey.
Mrs. Workman was a member of the Lansing Baptist Church, a member of the Fayette-Raleigh County Genealogy Society, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and past treasurer of the Fayette County Republican Party. She was a retired bookkeeper for the WV Department of Highways.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Workman II on June 6, 2006; and two brothers, James Dempsey and Eldridge Roy Dempsey.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, James Workman III of Lansing, Earldine Robinson and her husband, Clarence, of Lansing, Laura Campbell and her husband, John, of Lansing, and Kathi Pridemore and her husband, Darrell, of Victor; one sister, Eloise Danko and her husband, George, of Ravenswood; one sister-in-law, Eva Workman of Lansing; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Kenny Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in the Lansing Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2007, at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville.

Lansing - James Wallace "Jimmy" Workman II, 81, of Lansing, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a long illness.
Born July 28, 1924, he was the son of the late James Wallace Workman and Annie Lewis Workman.
Mr. Workman worked for 35 years for Ames Mining Co. He was an infantryman in the U.S. Army during World War II in Italy. He enjoyed playing baseball within the community and he coached basketball at Lansing Grade School. In his spare time he was an avid fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Madeline Biggs and Virginia Robinson; and five brothers, Clarence Workman, William Workman, Robert Workman, Dennis Workman and an infant brother Zenith.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Geraldine Dempsey Workman; a son, James Wallace Workman III of Lansing; three daughters, Earldine Robinson of Lansing, Kathi Pridemore of Victor and Laura Campbell of Lansing; a sister, Eva Louise Workman of Lansing; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at Lansing Cemetery with Pastor Kenny Hayes officiating.
Military rites will be conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post 3110.
