| Burial* | ?unknown, Hall's Corner, Belmont, Waldo Co., Maine |
| Note* | The Hall Cemetery is, from Hall's Corner, about three poles on the right toward Northport, just off the south side of the power line in the edge of the woods. It is at the end of a field which reaches close to the cemetery. Also buried there and with unknown relationship are three individuals: Nancy Jane, dau. of James and Jane Moores, d. 4 Sept. 1849, ae. 21 years, whose parents are buried in the Hillside Cemetery on Rt. #3; Selena A. Jackson, d. 20 Oct. 1862, ae 8 yrs 8 mo., and Mary E. Jackson, d. 25 June 1841, ae 11 yrs 9 mo., dtrs. of Oliver and Selena Jackson. Oliver and Selena are buried in Pease or So. Belmont Cemetery on Lincolnville Road. The date of Ebenezer's arrival at Belmont is not known. The 1810 Census shows him as living at Matinicus, and his son Robert was born on 22 February 1811 in Belmont. On 10 September 1823 he bought, from Benjamin Joy of Boston, for $275.00, a parcel of land in Belmont, Lot 22 containing 99 acres. On the same date, John Hall, his son, purchased Lot 39, containing 50 from Benjamin Joy. Ebenezer died intestate prior to 2 April 1838, likely in the last week of March. The cause of his death is not known; however, because no will was extant, his death was probably unexpected, and, based on the value of his estate, certainly untimely. The Hall Cemetery, where he is probably buried, is located a short distance south of Hall's Corner at the north end of a field which ends just south of a power line. The cemetery is in a state of disrepair. The following was drawn from records of the probate of Ebenezer Hall's estate as recorded at Belfast, Waldo Co., Maine. On April 2, 1838, Eleanor Hall requested of probate court, because "it is inconvenient for her to adminstrate the estate, that William Hall be appointed administrator." The request was granted, and William Hall, one of her sons, was appointed administrator. Also, on April 2, 1838, a $3000 bond was posted for William Hall, Administrator, signed by William Hall, Samuel Fletcher, Robert Hall, and J______ N______. The final acccounting report was to be submitted on April 1, 1839. In the April 12, 1838, issue of the Republican Journal of Belfast, Maine, was a publication by William Hall, stating that he had been appointed as the administrator of the estate and requested that "all persons who are indebted to the said deceased's estate to make immediate payment; and those who have any demands thereon to exhibit the same to William Hall." The notice was dated April 4, 1838. In May, the inventory was reported to the Court by William Hall. The homestead farm of 75 acres and buildings were valued at $700, the other personal property was valued at $180, and the total estate was valued at $880. On May 9, 1838, Eleanor Hall requested that the personal property be provided her. She "prays your honour to allow her out of the personal estate of which the said Eben Hall died possessed, i.e., wearing apparel and such further accessories as in your decision you judge proper." A notation indicated "personal property $180.00 give to widow." Also, on May 9, 1838, Eleanor Hall requested that she be given that part of real estate which she is "lawfully entitled to dower." In the May 17, 1838, issue of the Republical Journal of Belfast, Maine, was a notification of William Hall's presentation of the first account for probate and that a public hearing would be held on June 4, 1838, at 10 a.m. so that people "may shew cause, if any they have, why the same should not be allowed." On June 4, 1738, William Hall submitted his first account. He "charges to himself with the amount of personal property as per inventory $100.00 and prays allowance of the following charges and payments: ____Joseph ____________bill___???????____________8.00 ____J._P._Alden________bill___???????____________2.50 ____Robert_Emery________?_____account___________40.00 ____William_Greshole_(sp)_______________________36.79 ____James_P._White_____on_account________________9.61 ____James_P._White_____on_account_______________32.72 ____James_P._White_____on_account________________9.06 ____Andrew_Derby________________________________70.00 ____Ebenezer_Hall_(2)___________________________64.00 ____James_Emery _______for_Administration_Oath___1.00 ____Appraising___________________________________4.00 ____Jeremiah_Flagg_____for_coffin________________2.00 ____Widows_allowance___________________________180.00 ____Nathaniel_Fernald___________________________30.00 ____Theodore_Carey______________________________15.00 ____Attending_Probate_Court_____________________12.00 ____Advertising__________________________________4.50 ____For_assistance_in_making_account_____________3.00 ____Commission___________________________________9.00 ____Total______________________________________553.18 ____Balance_due_administrator__________________373.18 On June 4, 1838, the Court decreed that Eleanor was to have her dower in the real estate and a warrant to that effect was to be issued to Samuel Fletcher, Job Pitcher, and Asa Pitcher. Samuel Fletcher was a Justice of the Peace. The warrant that was issued on June 4, 1838, stated that Eleanor was to get 1/3 and that the above three persons were to set off that portion by "plain and lasting metes and bounds." On June 28, 1838, the determinations were submitted to the Court, first being a description of the land as a whole, and second being a description of the dower, as follows: 75 acres of land situated in Belmont and bounded as follows: Beginning at a stake and stones being the south east corner of John Halls land thence south 58 degrees west on Samuel Fletcher's line one hundred rods to a stake and stones bounded on the west by Isaac Flaggs land on the north by Thomas Thomases land and the Bickey Mill road so called on the east by the road leading from Northport to said Belmont being the homestead of said deceased with a one story dwelling house and one barn therein ________________________________income_________valued ____appraised_at__________________60___________700.00 ____one-third_part________________20___________233.33 The one-third part of 60 was crossed out and the following notation was inserted: One third part of the income is 20. For her dower, the following described parcel of the real estate aforesaid beginning at John Halls corner aforesaid thence on Samuel Fletcher's line south 58 degrees west eighty rods to a stake and stones and thence north twenty four degrees west fifty rods to a stake and stones thence north 58 degrees west eighty rods to the road aforesaid thence south easterly on said road fifty rods to the place of beginning containing twenty five acres together with one-third of the house and one third of the barn and other buildings. On July 2, 1838, William Hall submitted a petition for a license to sell the whole real estate because the goods, chattels, and credits of said Ebenezer were not sufficient to answer his just debts by the sum of four hundred dollars. The petition was granted. Notice was to be published three times and a hearing was to be held in August regarding the proposed sale. On July 26, 1838, one of the publishings was in the Belfast Republican Journal, and it was a request for a license to sell the whole of said real estate in order to answer "just debts" because other assets were insufficient. On August 6, 1838, the hearing was held, and the license was approved without opposition. An $800 bond was posted by William Hall "for sale of the land of said Ebenezer lying in said Belmont, excepting the widow dower and containing about 50 acres." Under the provision, the land was to be sold on September 20, 1838. As required, the notice of the adminstrator's sale was published on September 6, 1838, in the Republican Journal of Belfast. An auction was to be held on Saturday, the 20th of September at 2 p.m. (if not sooner sold at private sale). The real estate was described as "Being of lot number 42 in the Joy tract of land in said Belmont containing about 50 acres--Terms Cash. The notice was dated September 3, Belmont. On March 21, 1839, in the Republican Journal was a notification of the Second Account by William Hall to be presented for public hearing on the 1st Monday of April at 10 a.m. at which time people could "shew cause, if any they have, why the same should not be allowed." At the Apri1 hearing, William Hall presented his second account, which was approved as submitted. In it, he charges himself with the following sums collected on account of said estate since the settlement of his first account. ____Collected_of_Benjamin_Condon_note___________40.86 ____with_proceeds_of_Real_Estate_sold__________395.00 ____Total______________________________________435.86 ____and_prays_allowance_of_the_following_charges ____Balance_due_administrator_on_Settlement ______________of_first_account_________________373.18 ____interest_on_sundry_notes_taken_up___________60.00 ____Advertising_sale_of_real_estate______________1.00 ____Preparing_papers_for_administrator___________1.00 ____Notice_of_2d_account_and_preparing_same______2.50 ____Travel_and_attendance_to_obtain_license______3.00 ____To_settle_second_account_____________________3.00 ____Commission_on_the_above______________________3.00 ____Total______________________________________462.40 On October 5, 1840, William Hall again petitioned the court regarding the estate. The petition stated that William Hall, because the goods, chattels & credits of said Hall were not sufficient to answer his just debts, charges of administration, and incidental charges by the sum of Fifty dollars, requests a license "to sell and convey so much of the real estate of said deceased including the reversion of the widows dower therein, (said real estate being situated in Belmont in said county) as may be necessary to satisfy said debts and charges and incidental charges, pursuant to the statute in such case made and provided." The Court hearing was to be on the 1st Tuesday of November. The hearing was held on November 3, 1840, and a license was granted for the land to be sold at public auction or private sale to raise fifty dollars. On the same date, a bond was issued to cover William Hall which was signed by William Hall, Samuel Hall, and Lorenzo Hall. On January 4, 1841, William Hall swore on oath to sell the property "without any sinister views whatever." On January 7, 1841, a license to sell the land was issued, said 25 acres to be sold on February 27, 1841. The details associated with the sale on February 27, 1841, are not known; however, a further perusal of the court records would undoubtedly reveal the nature of the sale. Other court hearings were undoubtedly held prior to a June 7, 1841, court hearing which consisted of the approval of the bills that were paid by the Administrator William Hall. The following was submitted. ____Charles_Palmer_publishing_notice_____________2.25 ____Andrew_Palmer__for_administering_oath_________.20 ____Charles Palmer___advertising_________________1.00 ____Mileage_3_times_6_miles_each_way_____________6.00 ____Commission_on_____?____?_____________________2.50 ____Making_this_account___________________________.50 ____Balance_due_me_on_settlement_of_2nd_acct____26.54 ____Total_______________________________________38.99 ____Balance_in_hands_of_administrator___________11.01 What further ensued would be revealed by further probing into the records at Belfast. Of particular interest would be information pertaining to the widow's dower, part or all of which was evidently sold on February 27, 1841. If the 25 acres were sold, as was authorized at the January 7, 1841, court hearing, the proceeds should have been more than the fifty dollars which were needed to settle the account. Of interest, however, is that the June 7, 1841, court hearing showed a total of $50.00, the amount stated that was needed to settle the estate. Court records would reveal the related actions. |

| Note* | Sarah was probably buried at the Calderwood Neck Cemetery. In his will, John Calderwood, Sarah's father, stated, "I give and bequeath unto my Grand Son John Hall and my Grand Daughters Elizabeth Hall and Sarah Hall the Sum of Twenty one Dollars to be equally divided between them." The will was dated and signed on 20 August 1806. The precise date of Sarah's death is not known. In 1794, Matinicus reportedly had seven resident taxpayers, including "Ebenezer, Jr., who married a Miss Calderwood of this town." Speculation exists that she may have died at the birth of her daughter Sarah who was born in 1794; however, she may have died later because Ebenezer did not remarry until 1901. |
