Claris Monroe Treadway, 77, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Hidden Valley Healthcare Center, Oak Hill, surrounded by his family and caregivers, following a short illness.

Born Feb. 7, 1926, at Sanger, he was the son of the late Llewelyn "Al" Treadway and Lucy Suttle Treadway Darlington.

Mr. Treadway worked for Brownie's Transport of Oak Hill, driving a tractor-trailer for 22 years. He retired from Consolidation Coal Co. at Rowland and was a member of UMWA District 17.

Throughout his life, he was an avid sportsman, enjoying fishing along the New River and hunting among the woods of West Virginia. One of his favorite pastimes was joining the men in his family for weekend trips to his hunting camp, or meeting his fishing buddies for the day alongside the local riverbanks. Along with his admiration of nature, he was always growing plants, vegetables and flowers and was known as an expert gardener. His talents also extended to his amazing ability to play bluegrass music using the guitar, mandolin, banjo and French harp. He had a love for the sport of baseball and was a true Atlanta Braves fan.

Perhaps among the community of Oak Hill he was known as the "Christmas Tree Man," having spent the past 25 years assisting families in selecting the perfect tree for their home. He will always be remembered for his kindness, gentleness and helpfulness among friends and neighbors. He was greatly loved and will be missed by his family and all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Treadway. Claris was the last descendent of his immediate family.

Survivors include his loving wife and friend of 59 years, Hazel Aileen Price Treadway; two daughters, Sheila F. Toney and husband, Wilbur M., of Scarbro and Elizabeth A. LaRocco and husband, Nick, of Oak Hill; a son, Gary L. Treadway and wife, Wanda J., of Oak Hill; a sister-in-law, Nancy Garlin of Port Saint Joe, Fla; a brother-in-law, Irvin Price and wife, Jean, of Oak Hill; six grandchildren, Will Toney, Jonathan Toney and wife, Jena, Michael LaRocco, Michell LaRocco Craddock and husband, Ardie, Heather Treadway and Jeremy Treadway; and five great-grandchildren, Weston, Jordon, Jacob and Jenae Toney and Noah Craddock.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Revs. Delmas Wolfe and Jim Elmore officiating.

Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Will Toney, Michael LaRocco, Jonathan Toney, Jeremy Treadway, Weston Toney and Ardie Craddock.

Glen Jean - Raymond S. Treadway, 65, of Glen Jean died Sept. 25, 1994, at home after a short illness.

He was a disabled meat packer and a Protestant.

Surviving: daughters, Patty, Donna and Terry, all of Ohio; sons, John and Dean, both of Alexandria, Va., Timmy of Ohio; brother, Claris of Oak Hill; several grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Old Sanger Cemetery, Sanger, with the Rev. Bill Menefee officiating.
